Tips On How To Make Your Small Bathroom Feel Big

Even if your bathroom space is constrained, there are many things you can do to make the space feel roomier.  Here are our top tips for how to make your bathroom look and feel like an open, relaxing and large retreat.

The sink

  • Pedestal sinks are a great option for small bathrooms or powder rooms as they do not take up much visual space.  Removing the feeling of clutter can be achieved by replacing the vanity for a pedestal sink.
  • An oval-shaped sink will give you more counter space than a square sink.  The oval shape is also a softer, more feminine feel.
  • A long, single sink instead of a double sink is a great choice if your bathroom will not accommodate a his & hers vanity.  When the long sink and countertop are all one piece, it allows for two people to use the space at the same time.

  • Bathroom storage
Towel racks above the tub are both convenient and save on wall space.  Also, towel ladders can provide additional storage with minimal space.
  • Floor-to-ceiling cabinets make the most use out of vertical storage space and also add the illusion of height to a small space.
  • Retrofit an existing vanity with a storage unit or shelving placed on the countertop. For example, consider using a slender but versatile piece of cabinetry between a double vanity's two sinks, providing open and closed storage at arm's length. Top the cabinet with crown molding to give it a built-in look.
  • Gain storage without losing space by building shelves or niches right into the walls. Look for blank wall space that can provide plentiful storage space between the studs.
  • Seated storage, such as a cushioned bench, that comes complete with a wide drawer, can keep extra towels and bathing necessities within arm's reach of the shower.
  • A lighted mirror and electrical outlet inside a cabinet provide vanity essentials.

  • Create an illusion
Mirrored surfaces and well placed mirrors can add light and create the illusion of a larger space.
  • Glass-front cabinets help the bathroom feel open and airy.
  • A glass shower that has a curbless entry to eliminate any visual barriers or demarcation of the limited footprint helps to open the space.
  • Continuous floor tile - bathroom tile that continues straight into the shower stall makes the room feel larger.  Similarly, linking adjacent spaces with the same color and flooring makes rooms look bigger.
  • Mount the vanity on the wall.  When you have limited space, the secret is to get things off the floor. The room will seem larger.
  • Let as much natural light as possible into a room as it opens up space and gives it a character.  Take advantage of any windows and consider a well-placed mirror to reflect natural light.
  • Use light colors or neutrals throughout; as they are space expanders and can help your small space feel bigger.
