Bellevue Home Remodeling Tips

  1. Find the right home remodeler or contractor.
Your home is probably your biggest investment, so you’ll want to be sure you find the right builder to do the job.  Do your research and find a professional builder who does quality work.  Get references from friends or neighbors who have had work done on their homes.  Check online reviews.  Interview candidates and find someone you feel you can communicate with well.  The design-build company you choose should be someone you trust to do a top-notch Bellevue home remodel, someone who will help you make decisions and communicate with you throughout the process.  Have a detailed, written contract with your remodeler.
  2. Choose a timeless style.
Your investment in your remodel will be most rewarded if the style you choose is timeless.  For example, a traditional Seattle kitchen design will continue to look stunning for many years, whereas faux-wood paneling or country-kitchen wallpaper will get tiresome very quickly.  Trendy finishes will become outdated soon after instillation, so beware when choosing your decor.  Higher-end building contractors often employ designers who can help homeowners plan ahead and make design choices, which in the end helps preserve the value of the remodel.
  3. Plan ahead.
Before your home remodeling project starts, be sure you’ve decided on your plans ahead of time and have discussed it with your builder.  Once a project starts, changing your plans or having to make decisions along the way, can delay work and get pricy quickly.  Keep in mind that unexpected things almost always come up during remodeling projects.  So when planning for your remodel, its a good idea to keep a financial reserve to help cover any unexpected costs. Also, be prepared that your remodel may take longer than what you may anticipate.  Remodeling work takes time to complete. Even when homeowners factor in an adequate amount of time for a project, unexpected delays can push back the completion date.
  4. Pack away your valuables.
A home remodeling project, especially a large one, is going to affect every room in the house even if the rooms not being remodeled are sealed off.  Homeowners should take down pictures, move vases or antique door chimes, and pack away valuables before work begins. Also, take steps to protect your immovable fixtures, such as built-in cabinets and chandeliers. Have flooring covered with cardboard sheets if it needs to stay in good condition.
  5. Get out of the way.
Any remodel, no matter the size, can be disruptive to those living in the home.  If at all possible, especially if you are planning a large remodel or a remodel involving the kitchen or bathroom, plan to live elsewhere during the work being done on your home.  Its less stressful on family and pets if they are not living in a construction site, or having to be careful around subcontractors doing their job.  Just dealing with the amount of dust and noise while your home is under construction can be too much.  Spare yourself and your family the stress and discomfort, and take refuge in a rental home or stay with family or friends.
