Tips On How To Choose Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinetry can elevate your kitchen’s function and style or diminish it.  And, as anyone who has completed a kitchen remodel knows, cabinetry isn’t cheap, so you want to choose right the first time.

Here are 4 tips to choosing the right kitchen cabinets for your home.

What’s your style?

The style of your kitchen cabinets should be consistent with with the styling of the rest of your home. For example, if you have a modern home, you may want to consider flat paneled cabinet doors or open shelving.  Whereas if you have a traditional style home, then the classic style of Shaker cabinets or furniture style kitchen storage would make more sense.

Once you’ve chosen what style of cabinets you’d like, the next step is to find the hardware to match.  Choose drawer pulls and knobs that match the style of the cabinets.  If your look is modern, then clean, simple, contemporary pulls usually work best.  In a traditional kitchen, you may want to choose from glass pulls or oil rubbed bronze hardware.  In a kitchen that boasts old-world charm, then ornate fixtures can highlight raised-panel cabinetry that is characteristic of that style.

Color

Will you have natural wood cabinets or painted cabinets?  If so, what stain or paint colors will you choose?  If you do decide on painted cabinets, there are many great online resources for kitchen cabinet color palettes.  Or, an experienced designer can help you create a color palette that matches your style and mood and can go well with your flooring and appliances.

Functionality

Different cabinets can serve different purposes.  In fact, many of the best kitchen designs utilize a combination of different types of cabinets.

Drawers.  If you have large items such as mixers, dutch ovens, pasta pots or large mixing bowls, then consider a drawer within a cabinet.  Drawers are ideal for storing large items and make it easy to access your appliances.

Roll out trays.  Roll out trays, which are smaller than drawers, can easily be retrofit into any existing cabinet.  Trays allow you to easily see foodstuffs or kitchen utencils.

Corner cabinets.  Corner cabinets, if used well, can offer a lot of storage space.  By installing a half-moon lazy Susan or pull-out shelves, you can take advantage of the extra space in the blind-corner.

Custom vs. factory cabinets

If you want your kitchen cabinets to match unique architectural details found through out your home, then custom cabinets are a great option.  Also, if your kitchen remodel involves adding to existing cabinetry, custom work often does a superior job of matching a cabinet style and color.

The lower cost of factory made cabinets appeals to a lot of homeowners and are therefore very popular in kitchen remodels. The wide variety of styles and finishes available give homeowners lots of options.
